Vaseline stirs up controversy in Trent Bridge England vs India 2nd Test

It was jelly beans four years ago and it is Vaseline this time as a controversy erupted in the second India-England Test here when VVS Laxman was accused of using it on his bat to manipulate the Hot-Spot technology in the Decision Review System. "Has Vaseline on the outside edge saved the day for La xman?" tweeted former England captain Michael Vaughan after Laxman was ruled not out by third umpire after the Decision Review System (DRS) was pressed into action by England in the first session of play.

The Indian batsman was on 27, in the total 48 for 1, when the last delivery of James Anderson's ninth over passed his bat. The bowler and the rest of England players promptly went up in appeal for a catch behind the stumps and began gathering around the batsman.
As umpire Asad Rauf ruled in Laxman's favour, England skipper Andrew Strauss went for DRS but that too didn't favour the home side.
Kevin Pietersen and Laxman were seen getting into a bit of an argument and later Stuart Broad told mediapersons his side was convinced it was a nick.
"Players feel Hot Spot sometimes doesn't show faint edges. It's a bit of a flaw," stated Broad.
But what kept the controversy lingering was the Vaughan tweet which virtually accused Laxman of wrong-doing since Vaseline or any liquid on the bat don't show up on the hot-spot technology.
Broad actually went ahead and checked Laxman's bat if there was any Vaseline or liquid applied to it.
"I had a cheeky feel of the edge of his bat as the ball went past him. There was no Vaseline, no liquid there. It's just that Hot Spot is not showing very faint edges," he said.
It is the second time Vaseline has quite infamously figured in Test matches between the two countries who recently celebrated the 100th Test between them at Lord's last week.
When England toured India for the 1976-77 series, England's left-arm fast bowler John Lever was accused by Indian skipper Bishan Singh Bedi of using Vaseline to gain undue swing with his bowling during the Delhi Test—and end up with 7 for 46 and 3 for 24 in his debut Test.
Tests between the two at Trent Bridge too are known to stir up the pot.
In 2007, the infamous jelly beans incident happened which was intended to show to the incoming batsman Zaheer Khan that he was faint hearted.
Sreesanth too was full of antics and misdemeanor in that Test -- he once bowled a beamer at Kevin Pietersen; came around the wicket and bowled from practically 19 yards at Paul Collingwood and then shoulder barged the then England captain Vaughan for which he was fined 50 per cent of his match fee.

World's First 24*7 - 365 days woring Bank in Kerala [Mannarkkad]

Posted on: 29 Jul 2011

New Delhi: Amid tense bilateral relations, her charm has hit the headlines with her stepping on Indian land. Meet Pakistan’s youngest and first woman foreign minister, the 34-year-old Hina Rabbani Khar who is in India for peace talks.

Hina, who has inherited politics from her family, is a daughter of former Pak foreign minister Ghulam Noor Rabbani Khar and niece of Ghulam Mustafa Khar.
Rather her father drove Hina’s entry into politics, setting her on a different path from the hotel management career she had been pursuing with great zeal.
It’s because of her political roots that she has often been referred as the next Benazir of the Pakistan. After Benazir Bhutto, Hina is the next female face of Pakistan known world wide.
Born in 1977 at ‘Khar Gharbi’ village in Multan, Hina is the first woman to present the budget speech in national assembly on 13 June, 2009. A businesswoman by profession, Hina graduated from the Lahore University of Management Sciences. Hina also holds a Masters degree from the University of Massachusetts, USA- she has all that it takes to be a leader.
In 2008, she was named to the World Economic Forum’s list of young global leaders.
On a lighter side, Hina is a proud Pakistani and regards this very feeling as her most treasured asset. She is married to Feroze Gulzar, a businessman and enjoys riding, reading and travelling. She is also a member of the Young Parliamentarians Forum (YPF) Pakistan.
She is also one of the owners of the Polo Lounge, an upscale, popular restaurant located on the Lahore Polo Grounds.
It was in 2008, when Hina was elected as a Member of National Assembly (MNA) with a ticket from PPP from the constituency of Muzaffargarh, Punjab.

She served as a State Minister for Economic Affairs and Statistics as National Assembly member of PML-Q in 2003-07.

PFCA - The Smallest camera in the world & it has got no lens !!!

Tiny Camera Captures Images without Lenses

The planar Fourier capture array takes images from an array of angle-sensitive pixels. For example, the camera reconstructed an image of the Mona Lisa.
Researchers at Cornell University (U.S.A.) have developed a tiny electronic camera that captures images without using lenses to focus the incoming light. The imager, made through a standard semiconductor fabrication process, has no moving parts and is less than 1 square millimeter in size and about 10 µm thick (Optics Letters, posted online July 7, document ID 147442).

From the earliest pinhole cameras to today’s digital cameras, far-field imaging systems have relied on lenses and mirrors to focus the light onto a sensor plane, and that optical path length has limited how small these instruments can be made. Instead of lenses, the Cornell camera consists of a silicon chip with two side-by-side 38 × 38 pixel arrays, each covered with two layers of diffraction gratings. These gratings make the pixels sensitive to the angle of the incoming light, and each pixel records a slightly different view of the scene.
Alyosha Molnar, Patrick Gill and their colleagues in Cornell’s electrical and computer engineering department call their device a planar Fourier capture array, or PFCA, because it relies on off-chip Fourier transform calculations to make sense of the camera data.

To fabricate the array, the team used the 180-nm complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) process, which limited the array size to 38 × 38. With the grating period ranging from 0.6 to 1.4 µm, the PFCA is optimized for 520-nm (green) light; the grating size would need to be increased to pick up red light.
Although the tiny array will never rival today’s megapixel cameras in picture quality, Molnar and Gill say that the technology bridges the gap between the smallest commercially available cameras with focusing optics and the individual photodiode or pixel, which records only brightness without image data.

According to Gill, who started working with Molnar when they were graduate students at the University of California at Berkeley, the PFCA would cost pennies to manufacture and could work in weight- and size-sensitive imaging applications. “The most exciting uses are probably things we haven’t thought of yet,” he said.
